Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Xinyi (Lily) Yang. My student number is 10096164. I am appealing for my marks in STAT 351 and MATH 221 (Fall 2014) to be counted as credit standing.
My mother has been terminally ill with metastatic colon cancer for over a year now. She had a new cancer growing aggressively in the beginning of the fall 2014 term. She was doing well up until the second week of exams. She went from being able to take care of herself to extreme exhaustion and bouts of uncontrollable nerve pains. I had to help take her to doctors¿¿ appointments, cook for her, etc. Attached is a copy of a doctor¿¿s note.
This took physical and emotional toll on me. It was difficult during this time to get enough sleep and get a good deal of studying done. I had actually done very well on the other exams prior to the two that I am currently appealing because I was in a better state of mind and was able to study without many interruptions until her health deteriorated.
I was aware that professors could be emailed before exam time about taking various extenuating circumstances into consideration regarding the marking of exams but I thought it was too late to do anything about it. I had also moved into a new house before exams began and lived over a month without internet so I didn¿¿t think there was much that the department could have done.
I went ahead writing my exams until one of my friends told me that given my situation, it was probably possible for something to be done about my marks. I spoke with the AMS Academic Affairs Commisioner, Colin Zarzour, and we asked the professors if something could be done. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics recommended that I filed a formal appeal.
I began seeing a counsellor on campus from Counselling Services the beginning of the winter semester. My family is also considering bringing one of my relatives into Canada to take care of my mother so that my housework load can be lightened. These adjustments should help me to focus on my current studies and spending time with my mother.
