Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean of Studies,
Please accept my application to be readmitted as a student at Queen's University. I was required to withdraw for a period of three years that ended in May 2020. I feel that I am now ready to start studying at Queen's University again. When I started at Queen's University I do not believe that I was mentally prepared to deal with the workload. I also struggled to live away from home and the extra responsibilities that it entailed. In hindsight, I believe that I should have stayed in high school for an additional year. Perhaps I would have been more successful if I had. Three years on I now feel I have matured a lot as a person which for me is one of the most important reasons for wanting to finish my degree. A lot has happened in my personal life in the last three years. After leaving Queen's University I worked for a year at the Beer Store. Working for that year helped me to understand the importance of always putting forth your best effort even at a minimum wage job. The experience inspired me to want to do more with my life. I realized this meant I needed a better education. Therefore, I decided to apply to Niagara College and was accepted into the Canadian Food and Wine Institute to focus on Brewing. The program was for 18 months and involved learning how to brew beer but also involved taking courses in management, business, chemistry, and biology. I really enjoyed all aspects of this program, both the academic side and the hands-on production side. At the end of the 18 months, I received an Honours Diploma in Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management. In fact, I came in second in my class for my capstone project. I believe that successfully graduating from this program with honours really helped to boost my self-confidence. It also made me realize that I want to focus on a career in the brewing industry. However, I also believe that it is important for me to complete my degree. It is something I began and feel I need to finish for myself. I also realize that my prospects for being successful in this chosen career path may be limited without a degree. My plan is to enroll in one online course this summer at Queen's University. I realize the deadline is tight but I am hoping you will read this in time for me to enroll. I have found a course I am very interested in taking and believe I can be successful in completing. Thank you for reading my application. I hope you will give me the opportunity to complete my degree at Queen's University.
Sincerely
Thomas Clifford
