Petition Letter
The Associate Dean,
My name is Anna Rivard (20016578), I am a fourth-year Arts & Science student majoring in Linguistics. I am writing an appeal for my winter term course: GRMN 101, since the final grade is not a proper demonstration of my full academic capabilities. On April 8th, 2020, I found out I was pregnant. I immediately contacted both Student Wellness, and the Arts and Sciences Consideration, who both helped me set up accommodations for my three remaining courses: LLCU 110, LING 415 and GRMN 101. At this point I had decided I needed until May 15th, approximately a month and a half, to mentally and physically process the current situation. Additionally, with guidance from my Academic Advisor, I decided to move my graduation date to September. I hope you understand that I was unable to do schoolwork during this time period.
In both LLCU 110 and LING 415 I only had 30 of the course left, which included a final examination. I felt confident in both of these courses that I would not need to use the pass/fail option which was in place due to of Covid-19. However, in GRMN 101, I had 50 of my course remaining which included a final oral presentation and a final examination. Therefore, I was unable to use the pass/fail option since I was failing the course, due to the remaining 50 completion, before the deadline. I was always most worried about GRMN 101. On April 24th, I had a medical procedure performed at KGH. The next day, I moved home to my parents¿¿ house as my lease in Kingston had ended. Shortly following May 15th, I was able to complete LING 415, LLCU 110, and my oral presentation for GRMN 101.
Upon moving home, my grandmother, who is my main caretaker, fell extremely ill. At this point I did not have a job but instead was driving her daily to her appointments. My grandmother had surgery on June 4th, 10 days before my scheduled GRMN 101 final examination date. I was instructed to take care of her while she was recovering, and this had a large impact on my studies.
As all of this happened during Covid-19, it was an extremely stressful time. Not only was I the principal caretaker for my grandmother, I was also mentally recovering from my own health concerns and recent medical procedure. With this in mind, I am requesting for my current grade of a D in GRMN 101 to be changed to a P on my transcript.
Thank you for your consideration.
