Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
My name is Noah Bloch and I am a going into 4th year as sociology student. I submitted an appeal a fair bit earlier in the summer but have not heard back so thought I would try submitting again in case it didn't go through or was lost. I encountered an issue regarding communication with a professor first semester of third year when I got very sick and had awful headaches, which I have recently found out to be that I have developed chronic migraines. The core of the issue, which I have already shared with the undergraduate assistant Michelle Underhill, was that I attempted to correspond via email with the professor after finding out that the graded in class exercises which I had missed due to this I could make up. I sent multiple emails to both the professor and my TA. I also attempted to go to her office hours a couple times but when I went she was not there and I had other commitments at her office hours so I decided to get her attention so that I could either solve the issue over email or ensure she would be there when I was able to come. I did not ever really hear back from the professor however eventually after a bit of a run around from the TA, I finally insisted the TA tell the professor to respond to me. The response from the professor after multiple emails from me throughout the semester was as follows. Hi Noah, unfortunately there is nothing I can do. It is students' responsibility to organize any make-up quizzes for missed classes during the term; once the grades are in the system, they are fixed. In the future, make sure that you organize your make-up exams in a timely manner.
Hopefully my reasoning behind the frustrations are clear but to summarize, I had been frequently trying to get in touch with her to arrange said makeup assignments throughout the semester and after finally getting a response at the end of the semester, she replied saying it was too late to do anything. In hopes that this had been a misunderstanding or something similar, I replied with an email outlining that I had been in fact trying to from the start to organize a re-quiz in a timely manner, however, I am still to date waiting on a reply to that email. Initially I had wrote it off as my own bad luck for the situation, however after reviewing my grades with my parents this summer in preparation for grad school applications, I have now discovered that not only is it effecting my gpa in a significant manner, but many of the schools I am looking at take certain portions of grades so this mark will be incredibly detrimental to my ability to get into these schools. As someone who suffers from ADHD, as well as apparently now chronic migraines, university has proved a little difficult and I have fortunately not encountered any other professors like this. I know it is not representative of the queen's education but hopefully something can be done. I had talked to some friends regarding the issue and heard that a course could be made pass or fail, I know it is past the deadline for this on the course in question but I was hopeful that something at least along this line could be done. Please let me know if there is anything else you need from me such as documentation proving what happened.
