Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Rowan Walker, I am a first-year student, and I am appealing to switch into LING100.
I have contacted Professor Bjorkman who has stated she is willing to give me her official support after we discussed expectations, course work and what assignments have passed. We had this discussion on October 1st, and afterward, she gave me her support.
I wish to switch into LING100 as I have decided to major in linguistics with a minor in global
development. I was originally going to major in neuroscience, but have found issue with my lack of
excitement and happiness for future prospects and career paths on this route. I was getting up every day, dreading my classes and the future this major pathway was leading me to. I always believed that going into science would be the best option for me as I find science interesting, and there is always going to be money in medicine. I realized recently that I should not be aiming for a field of work in which I cannot see myself being happy in, only because it has stable job flow and early retirement. I would rather go into a career field that I can see myself being happy and fulfilled in.
I have always loved linguistics and languages, so when looking at what I want to switch into,
linguistics, with a specialization in language and cultures, was a clear choice. To declare linguistics as a major and global development as a minor, I need to complete the following prerequisite classes: LING100 and DEV100/105.
LING100 is not offered in the summer term, and wishing to avoid an expensive fifth year of
study, I am asking to be added into LING100 for Fall 2020/Winter 2021. The specific lecture numbers for these two semesters are LING100A ¿¿ 001 and LING100B ¿¿ 001.
I would be appreciative if you would give my appeal careful consideration. If there any questions
you would like answering for you to grant my appeal please email me at: 19rew2@queensu.ca
Best Regards,
Rowan Walker
