Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am appealing to drop two courses past the deadline and to extend two IN grades from the previous semester due to the impact on my mental health that the COVID-19 Pandemic and the transition to online learning has had. The lack of in-person classes and social distancing measures have required me to develop a new approach to balance my academics, my work life, and my mental health. It has required me to make modifications to my medical treatment and medications as well as therapy.
I believe I am now much better equipped for the coming year and moving forward to deal with this new way of learning and the obstacles it presents. The appeals I am making are in response to the unexpected challenges of this situation on my mental health that I have had to focus on this past semester and have been working hard to overcome. Among these are the inability to focus on course material, low mood, and low energy.
To speak more directly to the appeals, I am confident in my ability now to invest the necessary time and effort to complete the IN courses in the next semester thanks to the skills I now possess. The development of these skills was a complicated process and I was not able to dedicate the time and effort to the two courses I am appealing to drop as to successfully complete them, again, due to how limited these have been.
I developed a plan to graduate last semester with the assistant associate dean of academics that I am no longer on track to complete. Instead, I have met with an academic advisor, and believe that by taking a reduced load next semester and completing the INs, I would be able to graduate with a BA degree and take some time to evaluate my situation, and the development of the pandemic, leaving open the possibility to complete my BAH if the circumstances allow it.
