Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of the Queen's University Arts and Science Faculty,
Today, I am appealing my final grade I received in the course LLCU 432, which is a
course taken abroad at Fudan University in Shanghai China. I feel that I have
received an unfair grade. Throughout the semester, we were notified that the LLCU
course will be graded according to the Queen's standards of grading, not the
standards set in China (which are much higher). With that being said, my SOLUS
grade is an A-, which does not make sense because my cumulative average is still
much higher than an A-. From my understanding, I received a raw score of
71.05/100 in the whole course but when my professor sent me the marks and I
calculated the raw score, I received a 89.05. I have emailed my Chinese professor
and the head professor of the LLCU program (Dr. James Miller) but they did not
clearly explain where I lost marks and how the conversion was calculated.
Moreover, they just sent an email out to all the students on this program that the
grades were converted according to the Fudan grading system. The only other
information I received was that the Fudan University grade conversion is very
different from the Queen's grading system. My grades are as follows:
Collaboration 5/5
Proposal 19.2/20
Journal 18/20
final presentation 22.25/25
Final Report 24.6/30
With that being said, I am not entirely sure why my total average is 70.4 and how
that got converted to an A- on SOLUS. It just does not make sense to me how the two
numbers were given. My efforts to contact the two professors involved did not help
my case either because they just told me the certain assignments were weighted
differently. This does not make sense because the syllabus clearly outlines how
much the different sections are worth. All in all, I would greatly appreciate a reevaluation
of the marks that I received because they do not match up with the grade
that I actually received. I am unsure why a Queen's LLCU course is graded based on
a Chinese university grading system, when we were clearly told they were not going
to be. I have worked very hard for these marks I received and would like to see a
true reflection on the effort.
