Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am appealing to drop English 357 (Fall 2020/ Winter 2021).
During the fall 2020 I was dealing with sever mental illness (anxiety and depression) which heavily impacted my ability to maintain my academic performance. This mental health issue that I have been dealing with has made it very difficult to find the motivation and my ability to deal with anxiety.
In the process of trying to get back on track I have started attending regular counselling sessions with Student Wellness that began at the end of the fall semester. I have also been consulting with my family physician and a physician at Student Wellness.
My mental health condition has made it difficult to keep up with some of the coursework from the fall semester and I have been in contact with my Professors to discuss the situation. Based on these discussions I feel that I have a viable plan to be able to catch up with my English 326 course but I do not feel at this point that I will be able to catch up with the course work from English 357.
The reason I had not dropped the course before the drop deadline is because at the time I had not yet determined how I would catch up or received the support that I have now accessed from Student Wellness. After carefully examining and discussing the situation I feel that I will only be able to makeup for the missed work in English 326.
I have been in contact with my professor of the English 326 course to outline an alternate submission schedule as starting the process of re-registering with QSAS. I am also continuing to work with a counsellor to more effectively manage my mental illness. I am also maintaining contact with my family physician to manage my mental illness with medication when it is effective.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Best Wishes,
Megan Haire
