Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am submitting this appeal to request the removal of KNPE153 and BIOL102 from my transcript.
Nearing the end of the 2020 Fall semester, I experienced the unfortunate passing of my grandfather. He had a stroke November 2nd and passed away November 20th. During that time and then into the New Year I have been learning to grieve and process the loss of such an important person in my life.
Throughout my life, the loving and genuine nature of my relationship with my grandfather can be attributed to the close bond we shared. His passing was extremely difficult for me to process, as it was the first time I have experienced the loss of someone close to me. I was thankful to come home and spend November and December grieving alongside my family. During this time, I consistently struggled to keep up with my academics as I was unable to focus or give it my undivided attention. It was my full intention to finish the Fall semester to the best of my ability, but despite my efforts, I was only able to successfully complete HLTH101. After much thought and consideration, and not wanting to begin a new semester that I wasn¿¿t ready to manage, I decided to take a leave of absence for the 2021 Winter Term, and re-commence my studies for the 2021/22 academic year.
My counselor along with my family doctor, recognizing my situation and emotional state, wrote a letter asking for me to receive academic consideration. Even though I was approved by the university to be relieved of my studies for this period of time (November to December), I still received zeros in the BIOL 102 course for unwritten quizzes. I had worked very hard in this course up to November 2nd and I watched my average drop quiz after quiz. I was confused as to why I would be given zeros when I was under the impression that I was given this time away from my studies to be with my grandfather in his last days and weeks.
Over the last few months, I have been able to heal and grieve in the safe environment of my home. I have sought wise counsel from family counselors, those within the Arts and Science department at Queen¿¿s University, as well as my parents. Moving forward, with continued support from counselors and family, I believe that I will be able to continue to grow and see further successes in my studies and in my personal life.
Having outlined the extenuating circumstances that occurred in the Fall, as well as my plan for future growth and development, I hope that my request to have the BIOL102 and KNPE153 marks removed from my transcript will be approved.
