Petition Letter
Appeal to the Associate Dean (Academic) of Queen¿¿s University.
I am appealing to drop the listed classes of ECON 243, ECON 255, LAW 201, LAW 206 for the current Winter semester.
I am appealing the dropout of the 2021 Winter semester on grounds of personal challenges that have come forth through the semester that affected my academic standing and did not reflect my work that I consider characteristic of myself. Through the tough time of the pandemic, I learned of a very close friend childhood being diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease. This was diagnosed in start to middle of February. This was a massive shock and I struggled to cope as I was left feeling powerless in the whole situation and could only wait to hear any news I could get. I tried to get through the semester, but my head was not in the right space and I struggled to keep up with the material and my marks reflected that. I reached out through peers to try to help catch me up, but my mental state affected my ability to reflect my best work. I didn¿¿t drop the courses prior to the deadline because I thought it would be good to have school as sort of a distraction to the actual situation at hand and so that I didn¿¿t have to think or deal with it personally. I now realize this was a mistake and should have just accepted that at the time.
The situation right now is looking better as he finished his first round of treatment, although we are taking it one day at a time. I feel as though I am too far behind on lectures and assignments that I do not think I will be able to catch up with the limited time left in the semester.
I plan to retake these courses in the proceeding Summer and Fall semesters. By then I will be mentally prepared. I know this because at this time, his condition has improved, and I am doing much better coping with it. I am more open and talking more about the situation which has done wonders for me to get my head back into the right space to get back on track
I understand that this late in the semester, it makes it difficult to appeal these kinds of decisions. I also understand that I missed to date to avoid any financial penalty and I accept that I have paid for this semester, I just want to start fresh during the next semester.
I look forward to hearing from you on your decision.
Best,
Andrew
