Petition Letter
I am submitting this academic appeal in the hopes that I can have a failed course dropped from my transcript. I had appealed to drop this course several years prior but ultimately decided to withdraw my appeal not knowing the great effect it would have on my future. I am currently in the process of applying to several graduate programs that require certain cumulative GPA scores that I just do not have due to my poor grades in the first few years of my degree. To explain why my grades were as low as they were I would have to inform you that I have been in a constant battle with mental health issues since my high school years. I had thought it controlled until my family and I experienced a loss in the family in my first year of study at Queens. I then went on to seek support from the school in various forms of medication and physiological help. It was during the winter of my third year where I found myself in a period of severe depression that caused my grades to drop significantly. I then went to seek accommodations through the school in order so that my grades would no longer be affected when I had to deal with my mental health concerns. I was only able to re-organize my life around my new mental supports that summer. I then went on to prove in my next year how much I had needed that support by gaining a 3.34 GPA. I was finally in a healthy place mentally and I only hope that I can take away some of the damage my struggling mental health caused during an earlier period by having one failing grade dropped. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story. I do hope I was able to properly explain my journey to finding a stable place where I was able to manage my mental health as well as my studies.
