Petition Letter
To whom it may concern, I hope this letter finds you well. I took PSYC100 in the Summer 2020 semester and would like to appeal it. My mental health was negatively impacted when COVID-19 initiated a long-lasting lockdown. I was very comfortable at university with the support of my peers and felt very alone, anxious, and stressed during the lockdown. Personal family issues also contributed to my stress and distracted me from achieving the mark I aimed to receive. The family issue had been going on for a while but was amplified due to the pandemic restrictions. My sister becomes very suicidal because we were constantly stuck in the house, and I prioritized her mental health over my academic achievements. This continued until my mental health was negatively impacted. All my time was focused on her rather than on my schooling. Due to the circumstances, I do not believe this grade is an accurate representation of my abilities. If I had nothing to worry about, the final grade I received would have been significantly different.
Furthermore, I am applying for the appeal late due to misleading emails and false information on my next steps to applying a pass grade to the course. There was not enough information provided for students to know the rules and regulations for an appeal. Students rely on Queen¿¿s resources to answer any questions they have. The Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences updates were confusing and not informative. Due to the confusion, I was under the impression this course would pass/fail throughout my undergraduate degree. However, it is just coming to my attention that this information is not accurate. Therefore, the pandemic, decline in mental health, lack of guidance and resources are why I am trying to appeal my grade past the deadline. Thank you so much for your consideration.
