Petition Letter
Dear Jenn Stephenson
Associate Dean (Academic),
This is Junyan Pang, my student number is 20235174. I am a first-year student in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Queen¿¿s University class of 2024. In this year, due to my laxity and the influence of the environment, my academic performance was unsatisfactory, and my culminative GPA did not meet the requirements of the academic standing assessment. However, I feel very sorry and regretful that I have been required to withdraw for one year. Looking back on the past year of study, I made the following reasons to explain.
Firstly, due to COVID-19, I cannot listen to teacher's lecture in person, and cannot interact with professors and classmates like offline classes. I did not get used to the online teaching mode very well, and I did not ask questions about the unclear contents I had in my study and did not comminate with professors or TAs. Because of the reasons above, I fell behind in previous studies, which had a bad effect on my later course progress. Another problem brought out by the online learning is that the jet lag made me have to stay up late to do my work, like attending tutorials, etc.
Secondly, my mother has been suffering from anxiety and severe insomnia for many years and has been taking medication for a long time. The pandemic has made the aggravation of her illness because of her work and some other aspects, her mental has become worse in the past year or more. One is that I am worried about her, which has greatly affected my mind, study and life. I need to spend time to take care of her. Another side is that my mom often loses her temper at me since she cannot control her emotions due to the anxiety, which makes me feel aggrieved and anxious. My mother¿¿s moods are somehow having negative effect on me, I cannot cope with my daily life and schoolwork well.
Thirdly, I only got an email said that I was having a lower than desired GPA at the end of fall semester. Because I was new to the university life, I was unfamiliar with the academic regulations, and did not understand the reminder. Therefore, I did not pay attention to my problems when I received the reminder and caused me been required to withdraw for one year. I am very sorry about this.
I thought about my study experience over the past year and found problems with my studies. In addition to the two objective reasons above, I also lacked preparation for university study and self-discipline, which means that I was not well-prepared myself for the university study style that is different from high school. And sometimes I cannot focus on my studies or get fully involved into the courses, so my grades were not ideal.
I have now fully realized the importance of the issue in my studies, and I hope that I can return to Queen¿¿s University to continue studying through my own efforts and return to the campus.
I have retaken the two courses that I failed in this summer term, trying to make up for the mistakes and catch up. I believe that I have the ability and determination to do better in my future study. I will push myself and self-monitor to do best to achieve my goal. I will ask for help from professors and TAs when I encounter difficulties instead of leaving the problems behind.
Also, I will figure out the other surrounding factors that impact me. If I can return in September to learn in-person, the mental condition might be better both for my mom and me since we would be in distance, so there would be less wrangle and argument. And I will calm down and adjust my mindset to reduce the frequency of arguing. Scheduling my time wisely is one important thing for me, because I always do things without having a plan and cannot manage the workload reasonably. In the future study I would definitely list a clear plan from the smallest daily work to the long-term goal.
If I were suspended for a year, I would worry that I would never have chance to get back to Queen¿¿s University to continue my studies (there will be problems with my study permit). If I could not return to Queen¿¿s University campus that I have always been dreaming, this would be the biggest regret in my life.
Finally, I implore Associate Dean (Academic) to agree my returning in September 2021. Thank you very much
Your sincerely,
Junyan Pang
