Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean,
In this letter I am appealing to the faculty to drop HIST 106 (Winter 2021) and PHIL 157 (Winter 2021) due to extenuating circumstances.
The extenuating circumstances that I faced during the 2021 winter term were severe stress over my schoolwork and a lack of social interaction due to COVID 19. Over the course of the year many things gave me a sense of isolation. The first of which was the fact that my dorm room was fit with a bathroom and shower so I only had to leave for food. This was amplified by the fact that my ¿¿house unit¿ was mostly on a different floor. Lastly some friends that I spoke with in first term did not comeback in person during the second semester. In mid to late March I started to become overwhelmed by the amount of work I was being given to do without anyone to hang out with. Around this time I got frustrated with an essay I was writing for political Science and as a result stopped attending classes for around three weeks to avoid the stress. Obviously, my grades ended up suffering from this. After I started doing my work again around the start of April, I began speaking to a counsellor to try and understand why I stopped doing what was required of me. She said that it mostly came down to stress and the lack of social interaction due to the pandemic.
The reason why I am only selecting these two courses to drop is because they were the most intensive for me. Essays and assignments of greater worth occurred during this period and these two classes were the ones that suffered the most.
I have already started with my future plan to fix my grades for next year. As said before, I started seeing a counselor with the Student Health Services shortly after I started attending school again. From these meetings I have learned multiple strategies to help me deal with stress. Getting routine exercise and breathing techniques were two examples of these relaxation strategies. I have also started my plan on the academic side of things as well. I am currently taking a six-credit online summer course in attempt to further boost my GPA. I am doing quite well in this course as it stands. The next steps of my academic plan will occur next year where I will employ better coping mechanisms to succeed in my classes.
I am currently in the process of getting supporting documentation from the counsellor I spoke with. Thank you for your consideration.
