Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Academic):
I am writing to appeal the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of three years and drop CISC101 (Summer, 2021). I was very upset to receive the letter of my academic standing. But I examined and repented myself immediately. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.
I had a difficult time last semester. Last October, my grandmother was seriously ill due to the heart attack. She has been living in the hospital since then. Because of the pandemic, I cannot go home to see her. She passed away after two months. I have lived with her since I was a child, and we have a very deep relationship. Her death was a big shock to me, I haven¿¿t seen her for almost two years and was not able to see her at the last minute. Soon after, I was infected covid19 by my housemate. My situation wasn¿¿t very well. During that time, I was very scared and suffered a depression. I did not tell my parents. I am afraid that they can¿¿t afford that much. This affected my grades significantly. I should communicate with my professors at that time instead of doing nothing. Now I meet with a psychologist every month to share my feelings with her. I feel much better.
I noticed that my GPA is low. I really want to improve my grades. Therefore, this summer, I registered 5 courses that started in May. I was very confident that I can do well in every course in the beginning. However, I was wrong. Summer courses are very fast paced especially 6-week courses. Courses are originally designed in 12 weeks and now squeeze in 6 weeks. I don¿¿t know anything about computer science before, I want to give myself a try, but the reality is I couldn¿¿t handle it. 5 courses have so many workloads. After I received my grades for the two quizzes and assignments at the beginning of the fourth week, I noticed there is a possibility fail the course. But it¿¿s already after the deadline. I hope the committee could give me the permission to drop CISC101. I will add another course in July so that the course load will not too heavy. Fail a course will have a strong impact on my GPA. Other than CISC101, I am retaking 2 courses I took before, 1 Econ required course and a design thinking course.
Now I have improved significantly to allow me to position myself to again become a successful student here at Queen¿¿s. I plan to graduate this fall, and I believe I¿¿m on the correct path. If I successfully finish the courses in summer and achieve a good grade, I will meet all the requirements to graduate. I scheduled to meet with an academic advisor to review my transcript and I will follow advisor¿¿s advice. I am retaking a few courses this summer and this time I will focus only on study and do my best to achieve a higher GPA. I made a timetable for myself. I will follow the schedule I made and email professors if I don't understand any course materials as well as attend TA¿¿s office hours. I hope the committee could give me the chance to continue my study and grant me the permission to drop CISC101.
