Petition Letter
Request
I am asking to waive the requirement to withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of three years, as well as to drop the failed courses on my transcript from Summer 2016 through Winter 2021.
In step 1 of this appeal, I indicated the courses that I am requesting to drop after the academic deadline, however I was reached the maximum and was only able to indicate courses from Summer 2016 through Summer 2019. Please note that I would like to include the failed courses from Fall 2019 through Winter 2021 in this request.
Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances
From Summer 2016 through Fall 2019 I was in an abusive domestic relationship that prevented me from both attending lectures as well as submitting the required evaluations. My participation was often entirely non-existent during this period. In addition to this timeline, in the immediate aftermath of this relationship (Winter 2020-Winter 2021) I went through many major life changes, including leaving Kingston to live with my parents and receiving regular intensive counselling from a psychotherapist as well as support from my family doctor. The abusive experiences often made me unable to leave the house at all. Any work that I was able to produce during this time was used by this individual, meaning that many of my courses had no submissions, or only partial submissions.
I optimistically kept enrolling in courses every semester, hoping that my circumstances would improve, but that was unable to happen while I was still living in Kingston and could not escape the relationship. My decision-making abilities were obviously severely compromised during this time, and my mindset was to continue enrolling to convince myself that my situation would improve. Identifying as a full-time student during this time was essential for me to have an escape and to have something defining in my life other than this relationship ¿¿ even though I was unable to succeed.
