Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am appealing the faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of 1 year. I am also appealing to drop CHEM 112 (Winter 2021), MATH 121 (Winter 2021), and ENGL 100 (Winter 2021), and to request Credit standing in PHYS 118 (Winter 2021).
When the school year began, I had a lot of trouble staying focused and remembering things and it had a major impact on my eating and sleeping habits. Naturally, this affected my day-to-day activities. Throughout the fall and winter terms I worked towards improving my mental and physical health, although this made it extremely difficult for me to dedicate the required amount of time to my academics. It also made it difficult for me to remember deadlines and class timings, especially those with only a few dates that are weeks apart. Even though I had difficulty keeping up with the course work, I felt pressured by expectations to continue my studies. Since I was taking 5 courses while dealing with these issues I fell behind. I dropped 1 course in the winter term to lighten my course load, but I still had difficulty catching up. I also noticed that I take more time to complete homework than I should, and that my lack of focus even affects me when writing tests and exams. I used to stress a lot about doing basic things due to my personal issues. Although I do still take extra time to complete tasks and assignments, I have spent a lot of time learning to remain calm when I notice that I have a lack of focus or memory. This has made a big difference in my ability to get things done. I am now maintaining good eating and sleeping habits. Since I have improved at controlling my stress level, my ability to complete everyday tasks and assignments has improved considerably. As a result, my circumstances are significantly more manageable, and I am confident that I can continue my studies successfully.
I have been pursuing various avenues to gain further control over my current circumstance. For instance, I have already consulted an Academic Advisor, Student Wellness Services (QSAS), and I am currently contacting the Regional Assessment and Resource Center (RARC) in order to get further insight and assistance.
Sincerely,
Eman Wasim
