Petition Letter
To whom this may concern,
I am writing to appeal the academic penalty associated with a late course drop for GLPH 471, Summer 2021. I am having severe post-traumatic stress with debilitating panic attacks daily as a result of a psychological event that occurred, making it difficult to meaningfully engage in all my courses. My psychological challenges have been occurring since May and I have been seeking cognitive behavioural therapy on a weekly basis, however it was strongly suggested that to preserve my academic standing and my mental health, it would be best for me to minimize what I currently have on my plate and drop one of my courses this semester.
GLPH 471 is a very demanding course in terms of meaningful engagement, and I would like to do the course again at a later date in order to give it the time and energy a course like that deserves. I have been in discussion with both my primary care physician and a therapist since this started happening and we are attempting to handle it through lifestyle changes and learning new techniques however, if things do not improve, I will be seeking a prescription in conjunction with therapy in order to handle a basic course load as I have successfully done in the past.
I did not drop the course by the deadline because I was attempting to manage everything but my meeting with my therapist on July 2, 2021, a day after the drop deadline, brought to light all I had on my plate. If it were possible to complete outstanding work at a later date I would do so, however I there is a significant peer feedback component that I believe would be valuable to the course assignment.
I hope this contains enough information, should you need more please do not hesitate to contact me at the phone number or email provided. I have also attached a letter from my doctor.
Kindest Regards,
Andrea Black
