Petition Letter
March 15, 2015
Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to drop ENSC 305 (Winter 2015). I am making this request as a result of reasons beyond my control. I am currently enrolled in five classes, but this has proven to have adverse affects on both my physical and mental health.
On February 27th, 2015, I woke up incredibly ill and had to return to my hometown in order to receive treatment and recover. This particular illness lasted for just over a week, and required hospitalization for a number of days. I was incapacitated and unable to continue on with my studies during this period, and I did not have access to a computer. The attached note from my physician confirms my inability to meet my academic obligations during this period.
I feel fortunate that I am well enough to return to school, as early last week that did not seem possible. It is evident that carrying a full course load this semester has compromised my health as, prior to this, I have suffered from recurrent illnesses. Unfortunately, by the time I was able to acknowledge this, I had already fallen ill and therefore missed the deadline to drop a course.
I place a lot of pressure on myself to achieve good grades and internalizing this has caused me significant stress. I need to reduce my course load so that I can focus on regaining my strength while still meeting the course objectives in my four remaining courses. ENSC 305 has been particularly stressful for me and is not required for my program.
Should I be granted this appeal, I will take the necessary steps to ensure success in my academic future. I will be enrolling in a summer 2015 course in order to make up for the lost units. I will make adjustments to my course load in my final year, and will take no more than four courses each semester. This will allow me more time to focus on my health, and therefore will benefit my studies. I will monitor my health by meeting regularly with my physician. I believe that by reducing my course load I will be able to give more attention to all of my classes and my health.
I regret that I was unable to meet the deadline to drop this course. However, given the above circumstances that were beyond my control, I would greatly appreciate consideration.
Thank you for your time.
