Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I want to preface this letter by emphasizing that I am a student who has always been consistent with my studies, assignments, and submitting my work in a timely manner. Due to family circumstances that have impacted me since the beginning of this year combined recent issues I have been facing, I was unable to completely focus and give my all to my academics resulting in my failure to enrol in one of my mandatory courses.
My grandmother passed away on March 27th and it was an absolutely devastating and debilitating moment in my life due to how close we were as well as my inability to say my last goodbyes due to the pandemic. I was completely lost and that week's event took a considerable toll on both my mental and physical health. It also equally affected both my mother and father, creating a rift between them. At the time, I emailed my professor for CHEM 112, Dr. Anne Petitjean, regarding how my grandmother's death caused stress and tension within my family which affected my performance in her course. Ultimately, the situation was the catalyst for their divorce, which is ongoing to this day. This has caused a lot of turmoil for me as I am across the country and unable to help as my family crumbles four provinces away. I had to put my everything into just keeping up with my classes.
I am originally from British Columbia and this is the first time I have travelled out of the province and lived alone and I have been having a difficult time with adjusting to the new environment. I had planned to find a therapist to work out my familial issues and further issues that have affected me throughout the year, however, due to my maladjustment to the added stress of moving to completely different living circumstances, I've been focused on studying and settling in over anything else.
When selecting my course options, I checked with the Academic Course Planner which stated CHEM 211, 212, 222, and 223. I mistakenly assumed that I was to pick one of the four options and gave it no further thought as my mind was wrought with other issues. I was unaware that all four courses were prerequisite requirements until my roommate pointed it out to me recently and I immediately reached out to my academic advisor to fix my mistake. Unfortunately, I missed the course selection deadline, leading me to this appeal. I do not want my one mistake during a time of hardship to delay my graduation by a year. With this appeal, I am hoping to join the CHEM 212 class for the Fall 2021 term.
Thank you for your consideration.
