Petition Letter
I am requesting a late drop of my CISC 251 course for the Fall 2021 semester. This is due to circumstances beyond my control that have caused significant stress to my mental function.
In August, Queen??s instituted a mandatory COVID vaccination policy. Due to previous medical history and after consultation with personal doctors, I received a temporary doctors note and referral to an immunologist to do medical testing before receiving a COVID vaccine. I alerted QSAS and the ArtSci online offices of this situation and was granted online courses for the Fall 2021 semester. However, the situation has not progressed since then with the immunologist. I have been unable to get an appointment with them despite months of calling their office. I was told going into the referral process that the wait time was estimated to be 4-6 months, with a latest date of February 2022. I spoke with an ArtSci acacdemic advisor a few weeks ago after the academic drop date, who informed me that I would not be allowed to take classes due to Queen??s requirements. I was free to reach out to the faculty, but they could not guarantee a solution.
The situation has left significant mental stress on my daily life. It has been difficult to complete class work while being faced with a possibility that you will not be allowed to return to class come January. It has taken a severe toll on my mental health as a result, and I am unsure of my future as of writing this appeal. I am taking three other classes this semester; STAT 251, MATH 221 and CISC 203. STAT 251??s midterm is going to be at least 50% of my final grade and MATH 221 requires a lot of intense focus as the material problem sets take a few days to complete going into exams. I took CISC 251 as an elective, and would ideally like to retake this class in the future.
In attempting to rectify both my mental health and my situation with the immunologist, I will be requesting to take off the Winter 2022 semester. I believe this to be for the best.
