Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop PHIL 206 (Fall, 2021) after the deadline.
This term, I had severe unforeseen extenuating circumstances beyond my control that have led to struggles in my daily life, which have caused serious consequences for my ability to complete my academic duties as a student. I have struggled to feed, rest and clean myself properly. I reached out to Queen??s Student Wellness Services for support and met with Meghan Stouffer Leuprecht, a counselor with Student Wellness Services, for the first time on October 27, 2021. Seeing Meghan virtually helped me, and she gave me a variety of strategies to help me feel better. Meghan helped me get a QSAS Letter of Accommodation that covers the September 30, 2021-January 21, 2022 period. The letter gave me the maximum 7-day extension for my coursework, and notes to ??Please consider retroactive accommodations beyond the 7-day extension on overdue assignments due to severe extenuating circumstances?. I believed that I would be able to complete all of my courses with my new resources and Letter of Accommodation. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Though the letter and speaking to a counselor helped, I was still struggling to complete my academic duties and found myself in a horrible mental space regularly. After the November 1 deadline, I continued meeting with Meghan and still do. I have since been able to take better care of myself and have become more efficient at completing work, but I still struggle for days at a time. I tried my hardest to complete all of my academic duties, but as we near the end of the term I realize that I can not do that with PHIL 206. After meeting with Kerri Andrew??s on Nov 29, 2021, and after explaining my circumstances to her, she suggested I appeal to drop PHIL 206. I believe Meghan has submitted an email for me advocating that you grant my request to drop the PHIL 206, as it would greatly improve my mental state.
This term I have been registered in 5 courses. I will be able to achieve academic success in my other 4 courses, but not PHIL 206. For all of my courses, my professors have been accommodating, but this course is largely based on group work and peer reviews. I have struggled to get work in on a timely matter with all courses, but have still achieved success in my other four courses due to my accommodation. I am incredibly behind in PHIL 206. After emailing my PHIL 206 professor, I can not complete much of my coursework retroactively and will receive 0% for it. I am a high-achieving student who was on the Dean??s List last year and have plans to attend law school in the future. I fear that if I can not drop this course, it would negatively affect my GPA in a severe way and hurt my law school admission chances for many institutions. As of right now, I am at a very high risk of failing PHIL 206, but I have communicated with my other courses professors and believe I can make the Dean??s List again this term if my GPA only includes my other 4 courses. This is my first academic appeal during my time at Queen??s, and I plan on it being my last.
Going forward, I plan on bettering myself as a student by continuing with psychotherapy and am exploring resources like cognitive behavioral therapy and have discussed medication with my family physician. I also plan on taking a reduced course load during the upcoming term and possibly the terms following that. I will take the necessary steps to ensure that I do not need to make an appeal to drop a course after the deadline again.
Thank you kindly,
Jacob Klein
