Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
I am appealing to late drop the courses POLS 384, and POLS 327 of this term fall 2021. In the future I plan to lower my course load to help make things more manageable. During the term my mental health started to decline and that impacted my ability to meet my basic needs such as eating and sleeping. As a product of this it also impacted my ability to attend class and complete coursework. Due to the severity of my symptoms I went home to connect with support system of specialists which then they suggested I start a new medication. The transition onto this medication was very difficult and made it difficult to focus on and complete academic work. At this time due to the severity I dropped one course, in hindsight I should??ve dropped more courses. However, being in a new environment and reaching out to my teachers I was feeling hopeful that I could just tough out the semester. I was very much so wrong. The medication took longer than expected to take effect and also at the time I had difficulty recognizing the severity of my symptoms. This clouded my ability to make sound decisions and understand that the stress of a full course load was too much for me. The volume of the four courses was too much for me because my mental capacity was reduced because of my symptoms. The amount that I could accomplish in a day was limited and to be able to sufficiently keep up with 4 courses I was incapable. In addition to this, the content in these courses that I am dropping is a lot more difficult and the classes required I finished final exams. Whereas, the classes that I chose to keep did not and it was a lot more manageable with this course structure and my symptoms. I am currently taking medication and have a number of healthcare providers that I am connected with. So I am in a better place psychologically and in the event that I enter a bad place one again I have the necessary resources to help mitigate those situations. I met with my advisor to make some changes to my accommodations because my symptoms worsened and this impacted my academics so some additional accommodations were put into place to help me better succeed in the future. I also will continue to follow up with my accessibility advisor as needed in the future as needed. Tess Shepherd is providing medical documentation but I am also connected with other specialists that if you need more supporting documentation you can let me know and I can touch base with them.
Thank you for your consideration.
