Petition Letter
Monday March 23, 2015
Dear Associate Dean Studies,
My name is Marisa Piacentini and I am a first year student in the Queen¿¿s Concurrent Education Program. I have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and withdrew from residence on February 14, 2015. I am appealing to take off the remainder of the 2014-2015 academic year and to receive Aegrotat standing of the following three courses: Sociology 122, English 100 and Prof 110. I was able to complete the required 60 per cent of the course workload for all three courses, but I will be continuing my Psychology 100 course online for the remainder of the year. I already spoke to my professors before my leave. They have all been very understanding and have agreed to provide me with a final grade based on the work I have completed up until my departure.
As noted above, I have had to leave Queen¿¿s University due to extenuating medical circumstances. I received my cancer diagnosis at the beginning of January. I had my surgery to remove my thyroid and all of the lymph nodes in my neck on February 18, 2015. I was in the hospital for a week following the surgery and have been recuperating for about a month, as recovery usually takes that long. I currently take calcium pills three times a day, vitamin D pills two times a day and a thyroid pill that I will have to take everyday for the rest of my life. At the end of this week I will receive my pathology results. We will then be making plans for additional therapy that involves a radioactive iodine pill that will require further hospitalization and isolation.
My medical condition has affected me both physically and mentally. I am unable to move around easily since my neck is very stiff and quite sore. I am feeling very tired and it will also be extremely hard to concentrate in class because the thought of the cancer returning is very distracting. I continue to have these thoughts and am constantly worried about the future. I am planning on talking to a health care professional for further details and I will have monthly checkups with the doctor to ensure my good health and to talk about what my future holds. Doctors have recommended that I rest and avoid stress.
Although I will be taking a leave from the school for the remainder of the year, I am planning on returning to Queen¿¿s University for the academic 2015-2016 school year. I am currently looking into summer school courses to make up for the six units I needed to drop in second semester. My plan to return to school will assist me in continuing with my program without falling behind and further my post secondary education on the right track. I hope to regain my strength both physically and mentally and return ready to succeed in all of my courses in my second year. Thank you for taking the time to consider my request to receive my credits in full.
Sincerely,
Marisa Piacentini
