Petition Letter
To Whom this may concern,
I would like to apply for a formal appeal to have my final exam for my fall term course ECON 290 Environmental Econ and Assessment to be re-assessed by a different member of the faculty. I, unfortunately, failed the course as I did extremely badly on the final and I feel that I was graded very harshly.
I have spoken to my academic advisor regarding this issue and at first, I wanted to apply to drop the course late due to extenuating circumstances however they recommended that I apply for my final to be regraded first before applying to have the course dropped, so in this letter, I will state my cases for both appeals.
A couple of days before I was scheduled to have my ECON 290 final, Queen??s announced that all exams from that day forward were to be online and no other in-person exams were to take place for the remainder of the semester. I had spent a lot of time studying for this exam prior to its day as I had three back-to-back exams at the end of the exam period. Unfortunately, when Queen??s made their decision to switch to online exams this course only offered an assignment alternative rather than an exam which was still due on the scheduled date of the exam. When Queen??s made their discission to switch online my parents panicked as omicron was spreading fast in my home country and my parents wanted to have me back home as soon as possible as a lockdown was coming and travel restrictions were going to be implemented. Hence, I had just a couple of days to move out of my apartment and help my brother in Toronto move to a storage unit as we did not know what the future held.
This process took me about three days of nonstop work. After that, I had to start my journey back home which had over 3 connecting flights and took me about 36 hours. This left me very little time to complete the final assignment as well as my other exams. This final assignment was uncomfortable for me as I spent the majority of my time studying for a final, but the assignment was research-based and I had to restart from scratch, unlike my other courses which were online finals.
This made it very difficult for me as I had so much going on in the last few days before I travelled and having to do a research paper takes me a lot of time and concentration to do to the best of my ability.
After speaking to my academic advisor today they informed me that I could have differed my final assignment to a later date, however, I was unaware of this even to this day as I thought it was just for online finals and not assignments. No individual from the course had informed me that we could submit it at a later day due to extenuating circumstances, if I had known this earlier, I would have applied for it.
I will admit the final was work much below the level I know I can produce but due to these very tough times and extreme circumstances, it was the best I could do with the limited time and resources I had. That is why I am asking for it to be re-graded at first because I would like the credit for the course as I worked really hard the whole semester and due to circumstances outside of my control, I was unable to perform at the best of my ability in the final.
That is why I find it very unfortunate that I have failed this course as I was doing well in it prior to the final and the final was worth 50% of the course and determined whether I do well or not.
I would like to first ask for a re-grade of my final from a different member of the faculty and if that is unsuccessful, I would like to use the claim I mentioned above to apply for the course to be dropped late due to extenuating circumstances that had been in play.
