Petition Letter
The first course that I hope to change to a credit standing status is Social Psychology, which was a course that I took in the 2020 fall term. Adjusting to remote learning from previously having zero experience with online schooling was incredibly difficult, and proved to negatively impact my academic performance. However, while a major roadblock in my academic success, online school certainly was not the only factor that caused my grade to be reduced. During this time, my father lost his job due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19, which significantly reduced the amount of money that my parents made to help pay for my schooling. As such, the intense financial stress seriously hindered my academic performance, and caused a tsunami of tension within my life and the life of my family. Moreover, this all culminated in my father having a mental health crisis, and myself having to get the police involved. This was a seriously traumatic experience, and very much impeded on my ability to focus on school.
The second course that I hope to drop is Psycholinguists, which I just took this past fall. I was doing quite well in the course, but unfortunately the latter half of my term essentially got derailed, which forced me to defer two exams because of the state of my mental health. Within the span of approximately one week, my grandmother had a stroke and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, dementia, and skin cancer. Furthermore, I was broken up with by my long-term partner. This spiralled me into a deep depression, which I'm still working my way out of. Unfortunately, I couldn't pay attention to school as much as I hoped, and as a consequence, my performance greatly suffered. I am currently in therapy through the Empower me service at Queen's, and my counsellor's email is kaypsychotherapy@gmail.com if you need to get in touch with her.
