Dear: Associate Dean (Academic)
I would like to appeal to drop PSYC 100 at this time because of my medical circumstances. I understand that this appeal is supposed to be done much sooner than two semesters later, but I had to gather information to help support my appeal also I was not aware of the time sensitive process that is attached to an appeal the academic advisor I meet with did not explain this to me and did not explain the process correctly which delayed the appeal.
My name is Eric Da Rosa student number 20249356. I am writing this letter to explain the medical circumstance that led me not to pass the course in the summer of 2021. In the summer of 2021, I had a fall and hurt my back badly and was in severe pain. I visited my family doctor and he requested me to go to the emergency room and request an MRI to see the severity of my condition. When at the hospital they tried to perform an MRI and I was not able to lay down for the severe amount of pain I was in. The emergency doctor sent me home with pain medication and then rescheduled me for an MRI a few weeks later. I was not able to complete the MRI again due to the amount of pain I was in still so the emergency doctor sent me back to my family doctor for him to help control the pain and help improve movement. For weeks I would go to my family doctor for support, and he placed me on strong oxycontin medication to help with the pain so that I could function and move around and complete schoolwork. My family doctor sent me to complete a third MRI in August and I still was not successful due to the pain I was in. He decides to send me to a neurologist, and he request I complete and MRI before he can see me. Due to the lack of not being able to complete the MRI my family Doctor sent me to a pain clinic to see if there was a way for me to get some relief to complete the MRI but that was also unsuccessful. Since the visit to the pain clinic, I have been doing much better and but on the correct medication to help with the pain.
When the pain became unbearable it was already past the drop deadline which was in July 2021, and I had no option but to go forward and complete the course. I contacted QSAS (Queen s Student Accessibility Services) where I got support to help with the servers of my case. Even with the proper accommodation, I was still not able to complete the exam due to the fact I was given software to use that did not work with OnQ. I spoke with IT, and they were not able to fix the issue and I was told that I would of need to write it on a different date. This caused extra anxiety and caused the pain I was in to be much worse. The reason I am asking to drop the course is that I will not be successful in it if I am to repeat the course.
My plan for the future of my time at Queen??s is to take a reduced course load and to follow the advice of my support team. I am going to stick with taking two courses at a time and counting on working with SASS (Student Academic Success Services) at the university. I will also use the BDSW bursary to help pay for tutoring and whatever extra support I need.
Thank you for your time,
Eric Da Rosa
