Petition Letter
Members of the Board of Studies,
I am writing to you to request an Aegrotat standing in DEVS100 (Canada and the Third World). This request is following the recent and sudden passing of my father on March 20, 2022. My father passed under very difficult circumstances and the aftermath has taken a significant toll on my well-being. I am the only next of kin with no notarized will which has resulted in a lot of responsibility and difficult to navigate situations to undergo on top of the grief of losing a parent. In addition, my family is taking legal action because my father??s death involved medical malpractice. As you may imagine, this has taken a significant toll on my mental health and well-being and has resulted in me being unable to fulfill my academic requirements. I have taken a two week bereavement leave and have submitted documentation to extend my leave for another 1-2 weeks to allow me more time to grieve and navigate this time through the academic considerations office.
My professors have been very compassionate and kind through this process and most of them have made informal arrangements to extend some deadlines and/or forgive me of certain assignments/responsibility. My DEVS100 professors have recommended I submit an academic appeal to apply for an Aegrotat standing in the course. Because I am navigating very difficult personal situations and trying to make arrangements with 6 instructors about a multitude of deadlines, I believe that receiving an AG standing in DEVS100 is the best option for me. I am a very academically driven student and take my academic responsibilities quite seriously, so this appeal absolutely comes from a place of desire to have grades representative of my knowledge and ability and absolutely not from a place of simply wanting to be excused from things because I do not want to do them. I would be devastated to see my grades suffer as a result of trying to complete assignments/obligations when I do not feel mentally ready. Further, I believe I have completed the expected learning outcomes of DEVS100 and to be forgiven of the final assignments through an AG standing would allow me extra time to grieve, complete the assignments I need to for other courses and take care of my father??s affairs. As I said, I feel I have completed the course learning outcomes and as such, do not feel my learning will be negatively impacted by being forgiven of the final assignments. My instructors have already expressed to me that they would be supportive of an AG standing in the course for me.
I sincerely hope that you will consider my request as it would relieve a significant amount of stress for me. Please find my documents attached which include my father??s death certificate as well as my document from my doctor who has evaluated my well-being and believes that this loss and surrounding circumstances have taken a significant toll on my well-being.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration,
Molly Dion
