Petition Letter
I am appealing the Faculty??s decision that I request a further extension for an incomplete grade for my course Phil 311.
I was struggling with depression in November 2021.
My professor Dr. Bakhust very kindly gave me an incomplete grade for me to finish my outstanding work during the Winter term.
Unfortunately, I was unable to meet the deadline. My depression has been getting worse since February. During the winter semester, I enrolled in four classes, plus the outstanding works from Phil 311 last term. The workload was still quite heavy for me. Besides, because the first half of the winter semester was an online course,?? it required me to be a more active learner and have strong time-management skills. However, my mental state requires more than ever, a learning community and face-to-face classes to make me feel involved and remind me to stay on track with my study.?? The result was my mental state was declined more than ever during February.
I spent a lot of time and effort dealing with my mental illness every day. On the other hand, I was doing my best to catch up on the Winter term??s studying materials. However, things did not get better. I reached out to Student Wellness Services in early March, and fortunately, I was able to get in touch with the counsellor to deal with my mental problems. But when things were getting a little bit better, I?? got covid in late March; I had to stay at home and in self-isolation for ten days to prevent infection. Therefore, I could not go to the campus to attend the classes. And once again, I was falling behind in my courses. Besides, late March was almost the end of the semester, and I was too worried about my studies, and the workload had become too heavy to catch up and finish; my mental state started getting worse again. During the whole month of April, my mental disorder was too bad, and it prevented me from functioning well and doing anything essential. The worse is I did not contact my counsellor during April, and at the same time,?? I could not rely on my own to self-adjust my mental state. So I wasted a lot of time wrestling with my mental illness, which led to my lack of energy and time to study. And things could not get better.
In early May, I reached out to the student wellness services and again got in touch with the counsellor. And now, I can feel that I am getting better every day, and I plan to maintain a regular meeting with this professional counsellor every week to stay on track with my essay writing. Therefore, I hope I am making this appeal for a further extension of my incomplete grade on the course Phil 311 until the end of June.
Sincerely,
