Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to appeal my ability to drop CHEM281 after the academic penalty deadline has already passed. This summer, I decided to take CHEM281 (May 10-June21) with the hopes of successfully completing the course, but my personal circumstances came in the way of me accomplishing my original goal. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.
This past year I have really struggled with my mental health. I seeked counseling with Queen??s and participated in the Managing Powerful Emotions group therapy sessions from Feb 3- Mar 31. I eventually started seeing a trauma specialist therapist regularly outside of Queen??s, but I have paused my appointments with her for the summer because it was getting expensive and I had already surpassed all my insurance coverage with Queen??s (The dates of my appointments cover February 24, March 3, 10, 16, 23, 31, April 6 and April 22). I had a mental health assessment appointment with Queen??s Student Wellness Services on June 17th and the nurse practitioner I spoke with said I have moderate anxiety and moderate depression and would like to prescribe me with cipralex to improve my symptoms. I am going to continue to use the Queen??s wellness services over the summer and I hope to talk to a psychiatrist because I think I may have a mood or personality disorder. My last scheduled appointment with my therapist was supposed to be on May 24th, but I requested it to be pushed into the 2022 regular school year so it would be covered under insurance again.
I am completely financially independent, my mom has passed away and I have a strained relationship with my dad so I live and support myself financially by myself. I am paying two rents right now, both in Kingston and in my hometown Ottawa. I just felt it better for my mental health to not stay in Kingston by myself for the summer as most of my friends would be leaving as well. This summer I have been trying to work as much as possible in order to save for my education (began on May 3rd)and also cover my living expenses. Because I am not able to afford my therapist summer, I have felt an extra set back in my mental health and my ability to be as functional enough as to complete a summer course. This is out of character for me as I do really care about school and have done well as a student, but I haven??t been able to maintain this same drive this summer. I have only been able to complete two assignments and my midterm as the summer course wraps up this week. I am hoping to appeal to this course and take it at a regular pace in the fall when I can resume regular therapy sessions and use the summer as a break from responsibilities that feel overwhelming right now.
I admit that I knew taking an accelerated summer course was going to be challenging. It has been a harder adjustment as well adapting to living without the roommates that I am close to that help me and keep me accountable in taking care of myself. I do find it difficult at times to eat enough or find the emotional stamina to keep up with my responsibilities.
Please understand that my lack of class completion doesn??t indicate that I am a poor student. I really value my education and also my performance as a student. Thank you for considering this appeal.
Sincerely,
Charlize Delos Reyes Cash
