Petition Letter
To whomever it may concern,
Over the course of the past two years of school I have been afflicted with Attention Deficit Disorder and Depressive Symptoms, which had been undiagnosed, and therefore, not adequately accommodated at the time.
These conditions severely impacted my performance in the following classes, which I would like to be dropped from my transcript:
GEOL 104
WRIT 125
GPHY 250
HIST 242
DEVS 230
GPHY 230
GPHY 229
Total: 18.0 credits
Context of my Conditions
Attention Deficit Disorder is a particularly difficult struggle to navigate; discovering the extent to which it affects me required a learning process of hard work, introspection, therapy, and medication. However, I have learned a great deal about my conditions and how they manifest themselves.
The onset of my conditions began during the Winter semester of 2021. The tandem of seasonal changes and COVID precautions put strains on my mental health, causing my grades to fall. This semester I failed GEOL 104.
My condition continued into the Summer semester of 2021. I took far too many courses than I was able to handle, even though I knew something was wrong with me. I ended up abandoning these courses. It was necessary to focus on the issue at hand, which was the deterioration of my mental health. I sought therapy and underwent testing, which led to a diagnosis of ADHD and Depressive Symptoms, after which I could concentrate on learning about my conditions. I gave up on WRIT 125, GPHY 250, and HIST 242.
The following year was one of learning. I was still discovering how my conditions affected me, and navigating their treatment. One consequence of ADD which I learned, was that it made completing tasks extremely difficult. I would complete all the work for an assignment, or even an entire class, but past the last required steps seemed impossible. This was particularly apparent in GPHY 230 and GPHY 229, as I actually completed all of the work for those classes, but did not hand it in. This is also the reason I did not accommodate these classes beforehand.
While I have faced many challenges academically as I struggle to understand these diagnoses and how to address them, I am on the right path to recovery. Simply knowing about these conditions and how they affect me makes ADD easier to recognize. I have also found the perfect balance of medication, and naturopathic treatment, which is helping to alleviate these conditions. I have registered with QSAS, and furthermore, with the support of several therapists, I have developed strategies to cope, which have been proving successful.
