Petition Letter
Dear Arts and Science Faculty,
My name is Lailey Izadipour and I??m student at Queen's University. I'm writing this letter to appeal for a waive on the 21 day appeal deadline attached to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences decision regarding my academic standing.
Earlier this spring a decision was made concerning my academic standing at the University, I was asked to withdraw for one year from the Faculty of Arts and Science based on my academic performance. The news of this decision was delivered to me in a letter from the faculty on my SOLUS account as well as my school email. This letter from the faculty was released on Tuesday May 24th, however, at the time I had been traveling outside of the country in Iran. I was in Iran to visit family and due to the recent passing of my grandmother. During my time in Iran I had no access to the internet and therefore was unable to get onto my school accounts to see the faculty??s letter.
I returned from Iran in mid June to discover both that I had been asked to withdraw and that I had missed the deadline for appeal. This discovery left me very anxious, and in a state of panic. At the time I was unaware that to appeal decisions made by the school past the deadline for appeal, I must undergo a two step appeal process. Once I had read the letter regarding my standing I believed the only option left for me was to wait for a psychiatric evaluation I knew I had coming up. I had many concerns about my performance and behaviour during first year and although being asked to withdraw was disappointing I was not surprised as my performance at school was greatly affected by what I now know to be undiagnosed ADHD.
I then waited for my evaluation and diagnosis which I received last week, after which I emailed the Arts and Sciences student service??s account to explain my situation and to inquire into the next steps. That is when I discovered that to appeal decisions made by the faculty after a deadline I must first make this appeal I have written here. I??m asking to be given a second chance at appealing the Faculty of Arts and Sciences decision to require my withdrawal for one year. The opportunity to appeal would be greatly appreciated. My recent diagnosis has equipped me with a finer understanding of myself and my learning and if given the chance I will use my appeal to advocate for my academic future.
