Petition Letter
Dear Academic Associate Dean,
I am applying the first-level appeal to the Associate Dean about enrolling in the following courses: BIOL103, ANAT100, and LAW207 (2022 Fall) after the academic deadline. Below, I included my answer to the specific reasons behind the accident.
Covid brings a catastrophic blow to my body and mind. A series of issues made me fail to enroll in courses by the deadline.
Covid has dealt a catastrophic blow to my body and mind, leading a bad academic performance in the 2022 winter. On March 13, during Mid-term, I got Covid, I got a high fever of 38 degrees and was unconscious at first, then I lost body balance and passed out in the hallways. Afterwards, I quarantine and tested Covid, coughed, and fell asleep every day. Ended quarantine, I went to the library to make up my classes, I found out my mind is hard to concentrate, my brain was dizzy, the sleepiness was irrepressible, the breathing was in short and fast frequency, also I sometimes have abnormal heartbeat and hypoxia. I do not want to give up the course. The brain fog took a huge toll on my brain, I experience the pain between physical and mental. The mental stress that Covid brought has affected my mobility. Therefore, my limbs were sluggish, resulting in a twisted ankle. My normal life and study already exhausting.
During the 2022 Summer, I did not have the energy to deal with my Solus account as my academic waterloo brings mental pressure along with me throughout the summer. The sequelae of Covid make my academic efforts extremely unequal to the gains. I was heavily influenced by Covid, and it brings a disaster to my study and life. Later, I am emotionally broken and self-doubted: Am I truly an honour roll student before? For a long time, I was unable to face reality, and suffering from a mental breakdown took up nearly all my energy and emotional capacity. Therefore, I cannot leave any energy to take care of my outstanding debts. Starting from May, this mental break lasted three months. I had tried to defeat my bad emotion a few times, but I was stuck in a loop and exhausted by struggling with deep sadness. I cannot take care of outstanding debts under such circumstances.
With the care and help of my friends and family, I gradually cheer up and tried to find a way to help my brain and lung to recover.
When 2022 Fall was almost there, but my study permit has expired. The route to leaving Canada took tons of time and energy, so I missed the deadline for enrollment. On August 24, 2022, I met with friends to look forward to the 2022 Fall, suddenly, I figure out it was the day after the deadline for extending my study permit. I immediately broke down and bawling. An expired study permit, an accident and a serious personal problem caused me to change all of my plans, and I had to back to China immediately.
Firstly, before leaving, I need to book ticket, sublet room, went to Covid test, and apply No Criminal Record for application of study permit.
After that, the boarding procedure of the airline to Hong Kong required various preparation, the prevention of Covid and visitor management of the Chinese government is strict, and the quarantine period is long. In result, until sixteen days from leaving Canada, I completed the compulsory quarantine of a person arriving in China from a foreign place.
In details, I was mandatory quarantine three days on Hong Kong before flying to Wuhan, after that, I continued mandatory quarantine seven days in Wuhan, at last, I need mandatory quarantine at home for three days. At that point, I stay in Hong Kong for 5 days to panic buying an air tickets to Wuhan, and the airline need a Covid test on the same day, 8 hours in advance. For my flight at 8 a.m., I leave the hotel to go to the airport the day before at 11 p.m., so I did not sleep all night.
Moreover, during the quarantine period in Wuhan, a week before the course enrollment deadline, unfortunately, I got a fever, headache, and dizziness. I was strictly monitored by the doctor, which cost me a lot of time and energy and prevented me from enrolling in the course.
Finally, when the quarantine restrictions are over, before the enrollment deadline, I tried three types of payment methods on the school website but failed. In the end, I tried several times on wire payment, because the CIBC international remittance code is not matched my bank format. After keeping in contact with the financial department by email, the payment was finally successful, and require a few business days to process, and the deadline was missed.
I wish I have clearly stated why I cannot enroll in the course before the enrollment deadline. My Covid accident was unpredictable, and I was placed in an extenuating situation that was beyond my control. My inability to have good physical and mental status due to Covid does not exactly reflect my academic ability. The long-term mental pressure made my priority transfer to my mental health. Near 2022 Fall, the time and energy spend on quarantine forced me missed the deadline of enrollment. If I cannot retake the course in time, my GPA will severely affect my future studies and career. Also, I believe the enrollment of 2022 Fall would highly impact aspects of my status as an international student and influence my application for a new study permit in an essential way. The understanding and support from Academic Associate Dean?s are important to me. I hope to apply for a study permit as soon as possible, so I can return to campus in 2023.
Sincerely,
Nanjia You
