Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I hope this email finds you well,
My name is Nicolas Quito Rojas and I wanted to submit an appeal to drop the DEVS 230 (Fall, 2022) course due to extenuating circumstances.
The reason I am requesting to appeal this course is due to an extenuating circumstance which has taken a large toll on my mental well being. On October 22nd, my housemate was badly hit with a truck, causing him severe injuries and brain damage. His injuries from this, will take him months of rehab and recovery. To also mention, during this accident I was standing right in front of him and saw him right after he was hit. From this incident, this immediately took a toll over me causing me overwhelming anxiety and trauma. Due to the stress, this immediately put a pause on my academics since I was not able to perform in any manner. During this time, I was not able to make it to classes so I was granted academic consideration for two weeks. However, it was extended after a meeting with student support due to my mental state. With this in mind, my DEVS 23O class is one which relies heavily on participation and attendance. Since I could not make it to class, I missed a large amount of course content, which the midterm was strictly based on. Since I missed a large amount of course content, Professor Soederberg and I both agreed that in order for me to perform to the course's expectations it would be best to drop the course. Not just that, but this is an important course for my major in Global Development. To also note, during this time I had hoped I would catch up in time so no course dropping was required. However, the issue was the midterm, which could not be pushed to a later date, hence, I did not have enough time to properly complete the midterm. With this appeal, it will grant me the option to retake the course and complete it when I am in a better mental state. My plan is to retake the course in the summer 2023 term, which will allow me to have full focus towards this course. Though this incident has severely altered my life, I have been seeking help from friends, family, and therapists which has granted me some ease during this stressful time. To also mention, since this time has been extremely stressful I have found that with the course load dropping DEVS 230 will help me improve my academics by lowering my course load just for this semester.
At this point, I have contacted all my other professors and have reached an agreement on dates to submit the missing assignments at a time where I am able to submit my best work. Also, as I mentioned, I have started seeking help and seeing a therapist to help with my mental state, which will eventually allow me to perform my best mentally.
Thank you so much for your time,
Nicolas
