Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you to request an extension of my IN grade that was granted for my summer course, ENCH 417. I struggled through the summer to complete what was required of me for many reasons that were outside my control. To my knowledge, these have been well-documented.
Throughout this semester my mental health has spiraled out of my control rapidly and each of my 6 classes have seen the effects. I have been meeting with a mental health counselor (Roger Davidson) to work through my severe anxiety and growing depressive symptoms which I have struggled to have any control over.
The source of these symptoms are varied, and quite personal but one major source would be the fact that I have been dealing with the recent cancer diagnosis of my father, and as an international student, being away without the ability to go home without impacting my studies has been detrimental. Unfortunately, my studies have been impacted nonetheless. I have tried numerous methods to combat the overwhelming feelings that come with depression and anxiety to advance my studies such as the pomodoro method and supervised studying. But most days I didn??t have any control, focusing on anything (even my personal interests and hobbies) has been an impossibility, I have not been able to sleep, and my muscles could rarely pull me from my bed. These had been the majority of my days this semester. But, through my sessions with Mr. Davidson, I have seen a lot of progress and have gotten back in contact with my professors.
I believe that next semester I would be able to complete the course and I would like to do it justice. The reasons I believe I could be a better worker and student next semester include:
?? No additional course load
?? Time over the Christmas break to finally see my family and decompress and recover
?? A strong desire to finish my degree and graduate in the spring
?? I will finally have a support system present in Kingston (housemates, friends, family) to help me mentally
?? Regular sessions with Mr. Davidson to minimize the chances of regression
I have met with my thesis supervisor (Prof. Aris Docoslis) and explained these reasons why I believe that I am deserving of an IN extension and he has agreed to support me in this decision and remain my supervisor should the extension be granted.
If you would like to meet with me to discuss or clarify anything I have said, of course, I would be happy to.
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Nicky Wilkinson
