Petition Letter: Hello,
?
I am writing to submit a new appeal to waive the 21-day deadline for a late course drop. I am hoping I will be able to drop BIOL 102 from the Fall 2022 semester.
?
I missed this deadline because I simply didn??t have a full understanding of what an extenuating circumstance was or that I lived through what I would now consider one. On February 16th I met with Athlete Services Staff for an academic check-in to discuss my low fall grades. It was in my meeting that I learned about extenuating circumstances, appeals, and petitions. I was explaining my first semester and why I believe I achieved some low grades when we realized that some of my first semester struggles were extenuating circumstances that were out of my control. Upon learning these new things, and realizing that I had extenuating circumstances I feel as though I do have grounds to appeal to drop a course late. I missed the 21-day deadline because I simply didn??t know it was a viable option for me until February 16th.
?
To explain my situation, I started the year deciding to share a double room with a teammate. I thought it would be a good idea to live with someone living a similar experience as me.??As the semester started and weeks went by, I learned that my roommate was having major mental health issues and had been struggling with her mental health for some time. ?Of course, I wanted to help and be there for her but for sometime I did not realize the severity of the situation or the impact it was having on me.??This got to a point where I was trying to accommodate each of her needs which made me forget about mine. For example, I was constantly leaving my room either because she told me too and I was trying to help, or I was always accidentally on camera since my roommate is on face-time with her parents for her support all day long which made me uncomfortable, and lastly when she was often having breakdowns, I had to leave my room. This made me have to organize every day around how she was feeling and not around how I was feeling. Looking back I see that being her roommate and trying to change my schedule/routine to fit her needs was mentally draining and took a toll on my productivity and therefore my ability to balance my academic load. ?I did not prioritize myself well as I was trying to assist her the best I could. I got caught up in the situation and did not fully notice because I have never experienced a challenge like this before.??I know if the circumstances were different I could have found a good routine to put more time into my academics.??That is why I am hoping you understand that this was out of my control. I am working towards a more balanced schedule this semester, as well as reaching out for help to have better academic success.
?
Thank you for your time and considerations,
