Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hello appeal board, I am writing this appeal to have my courses from the fall 2022 semester dropped of my record. This is not the way I wanted to go through school but through the circumstances of my mother contracting breast cancer mid March 2022. This affected me in ways I never thought possible. When I first heard she was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was not until school was about to start in September fall 2022. I didn't know what to do with myself. You never can imagine the situation unless its happened to yourself. I was depressed and distraught, I was not able to get myself out of beds some days in the morning and I would just stare at the ceiling all night, wondering why this had to happen to me and my family. I was having bad thought and should have seen a medical professional about my mental health, but being from an Indian household, therapists are heavily stigmatized. Cancer is not just a statistic, it affects real people who live real lives. Being isolated from my friends and family here all the way in Kingston was probably the worst part, so I decided to go back home and help my family with the business and my sister. My father is somebody who is in the office from day to night so during the day my mom was home alone until my sister came back from school, and my sister who is 13 isn't old enough to really help around. I made the choice to go spend time with my mom, because I could never know how long I could spend with her. When the school was about to start in January I was able to get my act together and get back to my academic duties at Queens. This is not a sob story, after talking with my parents they knew my I decided to go back home and spend time with my mom. I understand that I will not be graduating with my class of 2024, but I would like to graduate and have a academic past that isn't clouded by my personal events.
