Re: Appeal for Academic Credit Standing for ARTH 220, DEVS 492, HIST 275, and DEVS 393
I am writing to appeal for academic credit standing for ARTH 220, DEVS 492, HIST 275, and DEVS 393. After a number of years of struggling, I was recently diagnosed by a psychologist with a Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Social Anxiety Disorder. I am now under the care of a Psychiatrist and I was advised by my psychiatrist put forward an appeal for these courses as I was dealing with an undiagnosed disability for which I could have been granted accommodation. I have also sought advice my QSAS advisor and the Academic Petition Office and my understanding is that my best course of action is to apply for academic credit standing for these courses due to the undiagnosed and untreated disability I was dealing with at the time I took these courses. I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.
As mentioned above, I have been struggling with an undiagnosed Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Social Anxiety Disorder. As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic Lockdown and the move to online learning for classes, the fall 2021 and winter 2022 semesters were particularly difficult for me. Being confined to my home and having to do my courses online exacerbated my efforts in trying to overcome the challenges I faced due to my undiagnosed disorders. The Lockdown and confinement to my home also had a huge impact on my mental health. During this time, I made an effort to attend the majority of my classes and stay on top of my work. However, despite my efforts to perform well academically, I struggled with completing my assignments which resulted in low final grades.
I knew I had the capability to do better in my classes and the marks I was receiving was not reflective the effort I was putting in. Regardless of only having one year left at Queen??s University, during the summer of 2022, I took the initiative to advocate for myself and get in contact with a psychologist to see what was going on because I knew there was a problem and I wanted to get help. After completing various assessments with my psychologist, she diagnosed me with having a Learning Disability, ADHD Inattentive Presentation and Social Anxiety Disorder. The report states the Learning Disability impacts my working memory, visual memory, aspects of verbal memory and executive functioning. The ADHD impacts my ability to stay focused, especially when listening is required and my ability to process information. The Social Anxiety Disorder intensified my challenges keeping up with school-work which resulted in the associated academic underachievement. This has impacted my capability to achieve my academic goals. The untreated learning disability and the disorders have created a negative cycle of me attempting to do my work and knowing I can produce quality work yet not being able to do so and then feeling paralyzed by anxiety.
The psychologist has given me list of recommendations and the psychiatrist presented a plan of treatment for my diagnosis which I have implemented during this year of my studies. After getting set up with QSAS and starting the treatment plan, I have noticed a significant change in my ability to perform academically and even my ability to operate efficiently and effectively on a day-to-day basis. Although I will never be ?cured?? from the challenges I faced from these diagnoses, I now have the tools and knowledge to work towards overcoming the challenges.
I am requesting academic credit standing for the course mentioned above because I do not believe the grades I received represent my abilities as a student. Given my undiagnosed Learning Disability and the information and advice received from my psychiatrist, my QSAS advisor and the Academic Petition Office I believe that I should be granted academic standing in these courses and my GPA should suffer due to my illnesses which I was not aware of at the time. I have attached my psychoeducational assessment to my application for you to review.
Once again, thank you for your time and consideration towards my circumstance.
Warm Regards,
Lalique S. Allan
