Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

My name is Connor Quinn. I am a second-year student here at Queen??s. I am appealing to drop BIOL 206, BIOL 212, and MATH 121. I have decided to appeal these courses as I have been struggling with heart problems for the better part of this school year. In October 2022, I began suffering from dizziness, at times loss of consciousness, and severe heart palpitations causing me extreme discomfort. This condition has landed me in the hospital multiple times over the past few months and I am currently working with a cardiologist to determine the cause. From October to February the symptoms have felt debilitating however they have been slowly improving this past month. These issues have rendered me unable to perform to the best of my academic ability as some days I even struggle to walk to class.

I had hoped that my health would have improved enough over this term so that I may continue with my full course load. Due to this, I did not drop any of my courses before the drop deadline. However, my health has not improved quickly enough to manage my workload, I am still struggling to make it to class, and I do not have the energy or concentration that I regularly would in a healthier state. I fear that I will be required to withdraw if I fail these courses.

If I am granted this appeal, I plan to take these courses the following academic year. I truly did enjoy the course material and believe I can excel this coming fall. I am confident that by September I will be back to full health and will be able to perform to my best ability. In the event that something of this nature happens again, I will be far more proactive in how I handle its effects on my academics. Most importantly, I will be meeting frequently with a medical professional to monitor my health.
