Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: The final exam in POLS 110B was a final exam where students were given four essay questions and tasked to answer three of them over the course of 24 hours. I began the exam at roughly 11:45 on April 20th. The exam opened at 9 am that day and closed at 9 am on April 21st. I finished the exam that same day at roughly 3:30 and left it for a few hours. I returned to the exam the following morning at 8:30 to once again read over everything and ensure that I included all the components needed for submission. At 8:44 am, I placed my exam in the submission drop box on ONQ and believed to press submit. After this, I closed my laptop and proceeded to the library, believing I had submitted the exam. Once I got to Mac-Cory to do work, I opened my laptop to find the submission page still loading and not submitted. I tried to submit it once again, the time now roughly 20 minutes after the due date (even though the Dropbox was closed at 9:10, 10 minutes after the submission time), and it did not work. I immediately at this time emailed my professor and TA, stating that I believed I had submitted it but that it had not worked. In this email, I asked for a slight extension to resubmit with the timestamps of my exam, proving that nothing had been altered after the submission time. This email was only sent 20-30 minutes after the Dropbox had been closed, and I made sure to say that it was an extenuating circumstance of technological error and the stress of exams. My professor said that it would not be right to allow me the extra to submit it as it would not be fair to other students. I then made it clear that the extra time would not result in any changes to the exam as it was apparent that it was done well before the due date. The extension would not give me any gain over the other students in the class as nothing would be altered in the exam. It would only be another chance to submit after a technological error. I have never submitted anything late in this course and made sure to email the professor immediately to state my case. The Professor offered a chance to write the deferred exam, which is generous. However, I do not believe it is fair as I already did the work and don't feel that redoing an exam two weeks after school at the same time as a full-time job would do me justice in this circumstance. I understand the concerns the professor has in this case but also feel that the short time of submission time to the realization of the error, along with the timestamps of work, proves that this was no more than a technological error and missed component by me, in the heart of exam season.
