Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean,

I am petitioning for retroactive withdrawal from Econ 110A/B Fall/Winter 2022-23, followed by retroactive registration in Econ 111 Fall 2022, and registration in Econ 112 when it is offered in the coming academic year.

Over the past term, I have been involved in a domestic and mental health related situation. Although I do not wish to disclose the specific details of my situation, I will do my best to outline for you the timeline and severity of the situation. Starting at the end of January, the domestic situation, one where my former partner and I lived together, was a very controlling one where my ability to go to class, see others, and seek help was limited. Unable to go out, be with friends, or pursue my passions left me in a worsening mental health state. I had been working with my therapist for months preceding January, both with the other individual and in one on one sessions. My therapist can attest to the profound impact the domestic situation I was in had on my ability to fulfill the requirements for my courses. Regarding Econ 110B specifically, my attendance and classmates became a point of contention from the start. Although all my classes were impacted, Econ was impacted the most as I was unable to go to class at all, fearing the retribution I would face upon my return home. Although I will not be able to finish this course this term, Professor Ian Crombe suggested two options. One, I take the exam in September. Two, I petition for retroactive withdrawal from Econ 110A/B Fall/Winter 2022-23, followed by retroactive registration in Econ 111 Fall 2022. In discussion with my professor, he also believed the second option to be the better one. This is due to the fact I was unable to attend the vast majority of classes, and was unable to complete the other course assignments to a satisfactory level, and sometimes not at all. Therefore, I believe that retaking this course in September would be a better option as it would allow for me to actually learn and enjoy the content. I really enjoyed Econ in my first term, and I did well; however, due to the circumstances I found myself in, I was not able to commit nor enjoy Econ this past term, even though I am passionate about the subject. Upon realizing the profound impact that relationship was having not only on my academics, but also my mental health and well being, and after talking with my therapist made me realize that I was unhappy, the relationship ended. Since then, I have applied for and been granted extenuating circumstances while also providing a verification of extenuating circumstances from my therapist. I am now frequently meeting with an ADHD coach to develop and refine my academic skills, introduce new positive habits, and identify areas and ways to improve. In addition, I am continuing to work with my therapist regularly in order to ensure good mental health.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I am petitioning for retroactive withdrawal from Econ 110A/B Fall/Winter 2022-23, followed by retroactive registration in Econ 111 Fall 2022, and registration in Econ 112 when it is offered in the coming academic year. I am working on a weekly basis with my ADHD coach. This work focuses on setting up my environment for success, understanding how my learning works, and increasing overall productivity. I have made them aware of the possibility of my taking Econ 112 in September, they support this decision. In addition to my ADHD coach, I continue to meet with my therapist for the sake of my mental health.
