Petition Letter: My name is Samantha Shaw,
I am petitioning to drop Anatomy of the Human Body (ANAT 100, Jan ?? April 2023).
From December to April 2023, I was experiencing stress-related mental health problems due to harassment/mistreatment in the workplace. During this time, I worked as an Education Assistant in my local elementary school; I was required to work in close proximity with the co-worker I was being mistreated by and suffered significant negative mental health consequences (insomnia, anxiety, depression, etc.) as a result. Due to my poor mental health during the Winter 2023 semester, I was unable to focus on/complete most of my ANAT 100 coursework.
Anatomy class required me to complete many small assignments, all within close proximity to each other, over the course of the semester (in lieu of a final exam). In comparison, the other two classes I took this semester had larger, but much fewer, assignments with much more time spaced between them; I was able to complete most of the assignments for those other classes but was unable to complete most of my ANAT assignments.
I did everything I was able to do, within the limits of my position, to resolve the workplace issue; when that failed, I resigned from my position at that company. From January until now, I have been having weekly telehealth sessions with a Mental Health Therapist named Melissa Valentina for support and treatment. I did not drop the course earlier because the mental health consequences I was experiencing at the time made it difficult to focus on little else other than the way I was being treated at work; it took resigning from the job (combined with the support I was receiving from Ms. Valentina) to fully address this problem.
