Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am writing to request Aegrotat standing in PSYC 331, PSYC 340, and HLTH 237 due to extenuating circumstances that have prevented me from writing the final exams in these courses.
On April 17, 2023, my mother passed. This was unexpected and upsetting at the end of term. Since I am the next of kin, I had to drop everything to attend to the arrangements. I had to travel 5 hours to her location, make arrangements regarding her body, her memorial, and the closing of her estate. My mother had significant challenges and I have had to manage many additional tasks related to her apartment, involvement in social services and family dynamics. I have no family support and am managing these tasks on my own.
Leading up to this event, I have been struggling financially and with my mental health. Due to a lack of family support, I have had to work two jobs as I am supporting myself financially. I must work more than full time hours to support myself. I am almost finished my degree and am enrolled in my final two courses for my Honours BA in psychology this summer. Deferring the exams has significant economic and academic consequences for me. I am unable to work two jobs, complete these final courses, grieve and then somehow study for three exams.
I don??t have the option to complete another semester of school ?? financially I can??t afford to be in school another year since I need to take the year to work to prepare for my masters. My mother??s passing was unexpected and has created an impossible situation for me academically and financially. It is my firm belief that no matter when I write these exams, I would be at a significant disadvantage academically and unable to complete these courses consistent with my academic performance to date.
