Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Dr. John Pierce, Associate Dean (Studies):

I would like to submit an appeal requesting a re-evaluation of my grade in POLS 403. I would like to have two of the assignments re-read including the critical response paper and the final paper.

I felt that the grades for these two assignments were assigned unfairly for the following reasons. Firstly, the instructor gave a limited explanation for the Critical Response paper which was a reflection based on a group presentation. When my partner and I went to Timothy Luchies' office hours to discuss the presentation, he refused to answer any of our questions regarding the content of the articles we were assigned to present, and stated that we were responsible for the interpretation of the articles. In addition, he stated that he had not re-read the articles recently and, therefore, could not discuss the material. Following the group presentation, each group member was assigned a Critical Response Paper to theoretically build from the subject matter of the presentation. The Critical Response Paper for my group was due on the Friday of Reading Week, so my partner and I spoke to the instructor and asked whether we can e-mail him during Reading Week with questions regarding the assignment since he would not he holding office hours during Reading Week. The instructor agreed and informed us that we could correspond with him via e-mail. While I was working on the Critical Response Paper, I e-mailed him to ask whether I can ask questions regarding the assignment either through Skype or via e-mail, and he responded that neither would be possible.

I felt that the instructor has been unwilling to accommodate any of my requests to discuss the course content. I wrote the Final Paper without going to office hours because I did not feel comfortable contacting the instructor, and my experience with speaking with him discouraged me from further seeking help.

As a result, I would like to request that a third reader, who is not the instructor, re-evaluate my work on both assignments.
