Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I have been accepted to participate in a work and study placement through Trent University for the Academic Year 2015-2016. I will be in Ghana for the entire duration of my placement. During this placement, I will be studying for one semester (Fall) and working either at an NGO or Grassroots organization for the second semester (Winter). In the Fall Semester I will be enrolled in four courses, earning a total of 5 credits. This is because the Community Development Course is worth 2 credits.
I am writing this appeal primarily because I will be taking a semester off from studying to work at either an NGO or Grassroots organization. I am aware of the academic consequences this has, but I accepted this placement because of the opportunity and experience I hope to receive once I complete this year long placement. I believe that I am capable and will do whatever it takes to ensure that I make-up for these lost credits, and to ensure that I graduate with the necessary credits and requirements. I have been in contact with both the Economics and Devs Undergraduate Chairs about my placement, and have come up with a temporary academic plan for my fourth year.
I am also aware that since I will only be studying for one semester, I will need to ensure that I do well in these courses in the fall semester. This is primarily because I will find it quite difficult and overwhelming if I have to re-take any of these courses upon my return. Therefore I will try my level best to ensure that I maintain a minimum grade of B in all the courses.
Studying in a different establishment than Queens brings about its own challenges and difficulties. This is because the host university's grading system as well as the professor¿¿s expectations is bound to be extremely different than what I am used to at Queens. Therefore, I might have a difficult time adapting to this new academic environment but I will ensure that this will not impede my academics. I will ensure that I am well adapted to the academic expectations, and hope to be successful in my academics.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: I am currently pursuing a major in Global Development Studies and a minor in Economics. The credits received from this placement will only be counted towards my major, as I will not be receiving any Economics credits. As a result, I have been in touch with the Economics Undergraduate Chair (Jennine Ball) to figure what options I have and to establish a temporary academic plan.
Academic Plan for Economics:
Since economics is my minor, I need a total of five more elective credits to complete the requirements of a minor. This is because I have completed the 3 required main courses, as long as I passed them. I am currently enrolled in Econ 223 (Macroeconomics Policy) online as continuing distance studies. Since this is a 12 week course, I will receive one credit that will count towards the 5 required elective credits that I need. I will also be taking at least 2 summer courses upon my return from Ghana. I am hoping to receive a minimum of 3 credits that will count towards the required elective credits needed to achieve a minor in Economics. In my fourth year then, I will complete the remaining credits. However, there is a possibility that I might have to re-take a core course (Econ 222) depending on my final grade.
Academic Plan for Global Development Studies:
With this placement, I will have received credit for Devs 410/411, Devs 300, and 3 Devs 300 level unspecified credits. However I will not receive credit for Devs 340, a required course for my major. Therefore, I will be completing Devs 340 and the required 4th year courses upon my return to Queens in my fourth year. I have been in contact with Professor Kumar who has helped me to figure out a temporary academic plan.
Even though I am going to try my level best to graduate in four years, if the need arises to stay for an extra semester, I am okay with it. I am aware that it is not encouraged for students to stay another semester when it comes to applying for graduate school, but I am willing to do so if it means graduate with the necessary credits and with grades that I am content with.
Finally, I will make sure that I speak to the respective academic advisors in both Econ and Devs upon my return to Queens to revise my academic plan for fourth year.
