Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Based on the recommendation of my Queens Academic Advisor, I am filing a petition requesting that my ??Incomplete? grade from DEV 101 (Fall 2022) be extended until August 13, 2023. Professor Taylor and I have exchanged emails about my request, and he is willing to grant me this extension. However, I want to be sure that I follow the proper procedure by filing this petition as well.

I have an ongoing disability that made it challenging for me to complete the DEV 101 course work during the fall term, so Professor Taylor kindly gave me an extension into early January to complete the work. However, during that time I was experiencing several other more severe mental health issues that caused me to reach out for counselling support (see letter attached), and I was unable to meet the extended deadline. I was disappointed with myself for not upholding my commitment to complete the work and felt like I had let Professor Taylor down, which exacerbated my poor communication. Given how overwhelmed I was at the time, I did not navigate my academic situation appropriately.

I am extremely interested in the content of the Global Development curriculum, and put a lot of thought and hard work into the course. When I reflect back, it feels like such a waste of learning, effort, time and finances to fail or withdraw from the course, given how much I invested in it.
Global Development is a subject area that I care deeply about. I can see my passion evolving into a potential career. I don??t want the challenges I??ve experienced this year that were exacerbated by my mental health flare-up in January to impede my future growth and learning in a field that I??m so interested in.

I have requested an extension to mid August because I am tree planting in Northern BC for the months of May, June and much of July. I will be getting further counselling support upon my return and believe I will be able to complete the course work successfully.
