Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Reader,

My name is Anne Lau and my student number is 10129818, I'm currently a first year student here at Queen's University and I am trying to complete an Undergraduate Degree within the Arts and Science Faculty. I am writing to you today because I would like to request to drop 3 courses after the academic deadline as well as a credit standing in one course. The three courses I would like to drop are: CLST 103 and RELS 131B from winter term 2015, and SPAN P10 from fall term 2014. I would also like to request a credit standing with CLST 102 from fall term 2014.

The reason why I would like to request such academic aid is because two weeks prior to starting Queen's University, my mother had disclosed to me her breast cancer diagnosis. Before this, I had been struggling to cope with the divorce my parents have been filing for the past two years now. Queen's University is now like a home to me, and it has only been accommodating and I truly appreciate the help and the people I've met here. However, transitioning from Hong Kong to Kingston was difficult for me as I needed to adapt to changes in lifestyle and culture. Having to be away from home made it extremely difficult for me to cope with my mother's breast cancer and supporting my sister throughout my parent's divorce. My relationship with my parents has always been a rocky one, I grew up with many a story of times I did not get along with them and times where I thought I didn't fit in or was approved of. The divorce and having to move away did not help to improve this relationship, and if anything forced me to become more distant from my family and fearful of the future. This caused me to become extremely distracted from my studies and made it hard for me to put the entirety of my effort into my grades at Queen's which I regret. I was naive and tried to handle my situation on my own, but I now know that I was wrong and I should have continued getting help (this is with regards to my 'emergency breakdown' meeting at Lasalle). My current grades are in my opinion not an accurate reflection of what I am academically capable of which I why I am hoping to get a second chance at a fresh start and am making such requests.

Best regards,
Anne
