Petition Letter

Petition Letter: In my first semester of second year, I had submitted an appeal to the Arts and Science board to drop all of the courses that I had taken due to an exacerbation of a mental disorder that I had. Unfortunately, I had fallen into a patch of rough mental health that caused me to perform poorly in my classes and thus, I had the fear of a subpar GPA. This significantly affected my anticipated graduated date as I essentially put myself more than one semester behind. I am planning on taking all of my first semester second year courses in third year. However, due to the intensity of the coursework in the upcoming fall semester, I am hoping to lighten my course load by taking Math 225 (Differential Equations) over the summer term. This will not only allow me to manage my time and coursework more effectively, but it will also provide an opportunity to deepen my understanding of the subject matter without the pressure of a full semester's workload and stress. I understand that the official deadline for course registration for the summer term has passed, and I deeply regret that I was not aware of the availability of Math 225 during this period. It was an oversight on my part as I was originally not aware that I could take this course over the summer, and I am prepared to take all necessary steps to remedy this situation. I am confident that I can quickly catch up with any material already covered in the course. I am prepared to dedicate significant time and effort to make sure I am on par with the rest of the class. I have a strong academic record, as evidenced by my transcripts, and I assure you that I will bring the same level of commitment and diligence to this course. Given the impact that taking this course over the summer could have on my ability to graduate on time, I kindly request your consideration and assistance in this matter. I believe that this adjustment will greatly enhance my ability to succeed in my studies and achieve my academic goals. I appreciate your understanding and am ready to provide any additional information or documents that you may require. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to your positive response.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have discussed my academic plan with the undergraduate head for Physics and Astronomy, Dr. Joe Bramante, and the physics advisor, Melissa Balson. I have also discussed what my options are with my other professors and how I can succeed in my undergraduate degree. I had suffered from depression and anxiety, an exacerbation of a disorder, for an extended period of time in 2022. This shifted my anticipated graduation date further by a considerable amount due to dropped courses. I plan to complete the courses from first semester of second year this upcoming fall. I was planning on working closely with Professor Bramante to secure my future and complete my degree in a timely fashion. I am planning on taking all of the necessary courses to graduate by 2026.

As mentioned in the previous prompt, I foresee that taking this course over the summer will certainly lead to a less stressful academic life in the fall (as well as upcoming years). Taking the required courses for a physics degree, with a potential astrophysics specialization, is proving to be a relatively simple and straightforward task. With the advice and supervision of Dr. Bramante, I am sure I can arrange my classes in a way that will enable me to even graduate by fall of 2025 instead of later. Most of the courses that I have not completed yet are physics courses and the others are all math courses. Working alongside Physics and Math professors, I can certainly create a complete plan for my graduation.
