Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am petitioning to add this summer class after the enrollment date because of an unexpected delay to my completion of my Bachelor of Arts Honors degree. On May 12th I received my final grades for the winter semester of my fourth year. Unfortunately, I did not pass one of my elective classes which meant that I was 3.0 units short of graduating with my Bachelor of Arts Honors degree with a specialization in Political Science. The last possible date to enroll in a summer term course beginning in May was May 5th. I was not sure if I would pass the class so I did try to enroll in a May term class before the deadline but I was unable to because I had applied to graduate for the spring which made me ineligible. Since the publishing of my grades and summer (may) enrollment did not align I was unable to enroll myself in a summer course to ensure I could graduate in the fall. After speaking with an academic advisor I was informed that there were July-Aug summer term courses I could enroll in as an alternative to the May term. When attempting to enroll in a July-Aug class I discovered all the classes I was eligible to take had full waitlists thus, there was no guarantee that I would be able to graduate this fall. The logistical obstacles I have faced the past week have made me develop serious feelings of anxiety surrounding graduation. I am petitioning to be added to a summer course because I want to finish my degree in a timely matter and get my life going, I want to work and start the next chapter of my life. I would be so grateful to have the chance to graduate in the fall. My failure in my elective credit does not reflect my ability or potential as a student. I am a very hard-working student but this past semester was difficult. During the winter semester, I was working to pay for my school and living expenses, taking care of my dog, contributing to my responsibilities as a Vice President for Queen's for Sustainable Fashion, and struggling with my mental health specifically a hair-pulling disorder called trichotillomania. Although none of these responsibilities are excuses for my failure I do think my busy life led me to become burnt out which contributed to my bad grade. Before my fourth year of studies, I had dreams to pursue high education and without a BAH and poor winter semester grades, I feel like it may never be possible. I need a second chance and have confidence that I am capable of catching up with any missed coursework. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My academic plan is as follows. I will take one class which means I will have a lighter workload. A lighter workload will allow me to focus on completing and achieving the course. My second step will be to facilitate a stream of communication between myself and the professor. This will ensure that I can reach out for extra help or office hours. My next step will be to create a time management plan which will block 2-4 hrs a day dedicated to school work. This step is helpful because it will ensure I stay on top of coursework and assignments. And my last step is to use my support system. Now that I am back home with my parents I have a much better support system and my mental health has dramatically improved. I am eating more, sleeping better, and getting physical activity.
