Petition Letter: To Dr. John Pierce, Associate Dean (Studies):
I would like to submit an appeal requesting a re-evaluation of my grade in POLS 403. I would like to have two of the course assignments re-read including the Critical Response Paper and the Final Paper.
I felt that the grade for both assignments was assigned unfairly for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Critical Response Paper had to be submitted as a theoretical response based on the subject matter of a group presentation. While preparing for the presentation, my partner and I attended the instructor's office hours to discuss the content and ask relevant questions for the presentation. The instructor could not answer any of our content-related questions and responded that the presentation is entirely based on our interpretation of the two articles we were responsible for presenting. In addition, he stated that he had not re-read the articles recently, and therefore, could not answer our questions. Following the presentation, my partner and I had to submit the Critical Response paper which was due on the Friday of Reading Week. As a result, my partner and I spoke to the instructor after class and asked whether we could e-mail him if we have questions regarding the Critical Response Paper since he would not have office hours during Reading Week. The instructor responded that we could communicate with him via e-mail during Reading Week regarding the assignment. While working on my Critical Response Paper, I e-mailed the instructor to ask if it's possible to ask him a few questions about the assignment via mail or Skype. He responded back stating that it would not be possible without giving me an opportunity to ask
After receiving back my grade for the Critical Response, I felt unhappy with my grade and sought advise from Student Services. I considered requesting a re-read of the assignment, but felt that the instructor was not accommodating and worried that requesting a re-read would negatively impact the grading of my Final Paper. As a result, I submitted the Final Paper without requesting further help from the instructor because I felt discouraged to seek accommodation or ask questions related to the material.
As a result, I would like to request a third reader who is not the instructor to re-read my work.
